Knowing where and when to vote, and what options are available for alternate methods of voting is vital to ensuring that your voice is carried from the checkmark on your ballot all the way to a final decision in an election.

Who is Eligible to Vote?

How do I know if I can vote?

Generally, you are eligible to vote if you are:

A citizen of the United States;
A resident of Delaware;
Will be 18 years old by the date of the General Election.
A person with a previous conviction on their record who has served their time, including some people with felonies.
- Note: There are some felony convictions that disqualify a person from being able to vote, even after they have served their time. For more information, read the list of ineligible convictions on the Department of Elections website and see this flowchart created by the U.S. Department of Justice.

You must be registered for a party to vote in Delaware’s closed primary. The deadline to change parties has lapsed, but if you have not yet chosen a party, you have until Election Day to do so.

Ways you can vote

To help you plan how to cast your vote, below are the options available to Delaware voters.

Early In-Person

For Delaware’s 2024 Primary Election, the early voting period will be:

Wednesday August 28, 2024 to Saturday, August 31, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Tuesday, September 3, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Wednesday, September 4 to Sunday, September 8, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

You can vote at ANY early voting location in your county of residence during the early voting timeframe.

Delaware’s Primary Elections are on Tuesday, September 10. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Absentee Ballot

If you are unable to vote in person on Election Day, you may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. To vote absentee you must qualify for one of the reasons listed on the Department of Elections website. More info at bit.ly/de-absentee-voting.

Note: If your absentee status in iVote is listed as “Indefinite”, this means that you have requested to be a permanent absentee voter. You will automatically receive an absentee ballot for all elections for which you are eligible to vote.

The Department of Elections can issue absentee ballots up to noon on Monday, September 9

Returning Your Absentee Ballot

Your ballot must be received by the Department of Elections office for your county by 8 pm on Election Day, Tuesday September 10. You can return your ballot by:

Placing the ballot in the U.S. Mail
Dropping off the ballot at the Department of Elections office in your county.
You can vote absentee in-person at your county Department of Elections office between 8:30 am and 4 pm on business days, or between 8:30 am and noon the day before the election. You must bring ID.

You can vote in-person even if you requested an absentee ballot but did not return it.
